Not In Our TownGlenn County is extremely proud to develop this first ever Glenn County Substance Abuse Prevention Web Site for the World. This web site is a state-of-the-art, one-stop shop for substance abuse prevention for Glenn County and for all who access this site.
Not In Our TownGlenn County is an extremely effective, all-volunteer Substance Abuse Prevention coalition. Not In our TownGlenn County is a Collaboration of Government, the Private Sector, Businesses, Community Groups and Media working together to provide substance abuse prevention through education, awareness and intervention for the safety of our communities.
Not In Our TownGlenn County was started in May of 2002 with the assistance of then Shasta County District Attorney McGreggor Scott. Mr. Scott graciously brought the Board of Directors from Not In Our TownShasta County to an open forum meeting in Glenn County.
The meeting was very well attended; Glenn County administrators were looking for solutions to the substance abuse epidemic in Glenn County. The Glenn County administrators were informed by the Not In Our Town-Shasta County coalition of their accomplishments. They laid out their strategies for addressing substance abuse issues in their community, and how prevention was a pro-active solution to the problem.
After this initial meeting Not In Our TownGlenn County (NIOTGC) has not looked back. NIOTGC has provided substance abuse education and awareness to over 45% of Glenn County’s population; of this percentage over 4,000 were students. NIOT, working with the State of California Department of Crime and Violence Prevention, facilitated methamphetamine public service announcements on local television stations. Along with the Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement, NIOTGC provided two half-hour television interviews discussing the overwhelming methamphetamine epidemic. NIOT produced a substance abuse prevention workshop in order to assess what substance abuse prevention currently existed, how affective it was, and what could be added to help improve substance abuse prevention. NIOT was instrumental in helping provide the first ever three-day Glenn County Drug Store program for over five hundred 8th grade students. NIOTGC financially assisted the Glenn County K-9 Association to help provide the greatly needed drug dog "Yukon" for the Glenn County Sheriffs Office.
Prevention, Intervention and Treatment are the roadmap for conquering substance abuse. It is imperative that effective, repetitive Prevention education becomes the primary influence in order to diminish Intervention and Treatment. If an individual is not offered Prevention, the potential for Intervention or Treatment is greatly increased and at a much greater cost.
Not In Our TownGlenn County supports all Prevention, Intervention and Treatment. This web site is designed to promote all three of these areas of Substance Abuse reduction, with the primary focus on Prevention, the only realistic solution.
Sincerely,
James C. Bettencourt
Not In Our Town-Glenn County
